Palm Beach County teachers awarded grants to study Holocaust education 2/12/2011
"Spring Break will be a time for intense study in Holocaust and genocide education for 22 Palm Beach County public school educators, thanks to a specially funded project.
Boca Raton-based League for Educational Awareness of the Holocaust, or LEAH, is providing $25,000 in grants to send the teachers to a three-day training session at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., from March 14-16.
"We believe that educators need intensive and transformative experiences in order to be able to effectively teach Holocaust, genocide and human rights curriculum," said Amanda McGee, LEAH's executive director.
Sean Harrison, a seventh-grade civics teacher at Loggers Run Middle School west of Boca Raton, said he's grateful for being selected for the all-expenses-paid experience. About 100 teachers across the county applied.
"This trip will teach me more facts and details I can relate to the kids to straighten out the truths so they can be more knowledgeable," said Harrison, who plans to teach about the Holocaust for three weeks in May."
